First aired internationally on February 2nd, 2018, Darling in the Franxx is a Japanese science fiction and romantic drama anime series co-produced by A-1 Pictures and Trigger and co-animated by Trigger CloverWorks animation studios.
Directed by Atsushi Nishigori, the show takes place in a post-apocalyptic world where children, called parasites, are created artificially with the sole purpose of protecting and preserving humanity.
The narrative revolves around the partnership between the protagonist Hiro and a hybrid human named Zero Two and their squadron of 10 pilots.
Received with both acclaim for its coming-of-age components and controversy for the sexual implications concerning its teenage characters, Darling in the Franxx boasts 4.3/5 stars on Crunchyroll.

Despite rumors circulating social media, there are no official announcements from CloverWorks nor Trigger concerning a Darling in the Franxx season two.
Some speculate that the creators are hesitant to renew the series due to the harsh critique garnered by the final episodes of season one, where many critics claimed the plot resolution was too rushed.
Regardless, considering the show last aired in July of 2018, a full three years ago, it is improbable there will be a season two anytime soon.

The final episode of season one saw most, if not all, plot questions answered and resolutions met. Everyone in the troop matures while Kokoro births a healthy baby, and Goro starts a quest to search the world for children in desperate need.
Meanwhile, Hiro and Zero Two continue their battle in space despite a bleak outlook. After an uplifting prayer from the rest of the group grants them the energy boost needed, Hiro and Zero Two kiss, become one, and fight until ultimately sacrificing themselves to save humanity.
Eight years later, humanity has fully redeveloped itself, each member of the original squad happily heading their own families. Finally, the show closes with reincarnations of Hiro and Zero Two living happily together in the world they died to create.
What We Should Expect From Season Two
While there is no confirmed season two, there is plenty of speculation amongst fans about what a season two would entail. Considering that season one concluded with a concrete resolution, a new season would need to give the series an entirely fresh start.
Two popular fan theories suggest a prequel plotline or starting a thousand years into the future following Hiro and Zero Two’s reincarnation. With the primary antagonist promising to return at the end of season one, perhaps this is the best-case scenario for a season two.
